It's not "Owai da" but "Owari da(Owali da)" means "Now it's over" as you wrote.
Japanese "R" is pronounced closer to "L" than "R" but not the same.
ra,ri, ru, re, ro, are pronounced like la,li, lu, le, lo.
Owari da. This is your idea. You think that something is over.
Owari dato! Someone may say "It's over" and you said " Owari dato!" which means you can't accept it or you can't believe it.
