The Night Agentcame out of nowhere to become one of Netflix's most-watched shows of all time when it premiered early last year. Unsurprisingly, fans are champing at the bit for any info about Season 2 of this conspiracy thriller series, adapted from Matthew Quirk's novel of the same name, which follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), who finds himself unraveling a vast conspiracy inside the U.S. government after he answers a mysterious phone in the basement of the White House.
There's not much to know about Season 2 yet, but that doesn't mean we can't start asking questions about a release date, what the new season will be about, and more.
The Night Agent Season 2 latest news
In October 2024, well before the Season 2 premiere, Netflix renewedThe Night Agent for Season 3, according to Deadline. However, it's a good news-bad news situation. Season 2 has been delayed and won't air in 2024, as previously expected. No timeline has been given other than 2025. Netflix also released the first photos from Season 2, which you can see below.
The Night Agent Season 2 estimated release date
There's no information yet on when exactly Season 2 will be released, but in October,Deadlinereported that the previous release window of 2024 had been pushed back to sometime in 2025. However, the wait for Season 3 isn't expected to take as long; while Season 2 was disrupted by the actors and writers strikes for fair wages and uncertainty about its future, work on the third season picked up quickly after Season 2 was done because Netflix knew it had a massive hit. Previously, in December 2023, Deadline reported that Season 2 would consist of 10 episodes.
The Night AgentSeason 2 renewal
Mission accomplished! On March 29, 2023, less than a week after it premiered on Netflix,The Night Agentwas renewed for Season 2. And it wasn't a tough decision. Since Netflix began releasing Top 10 data, the series is one of the streamer's most popular English-language shows, clocking in with the third-best opening week for a new Netflix series, behind onlyWednesdayandMonster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In Oct. 2024, The Night Agent was renewed for a third season.
What will The Night AgentSeason 2 be about?
Season 1 followed Matthew Quirk's book of the same name, but Quirk never wrote a second book detailing the further adventures of Peter Sutherland. That means Season 2 of The Night Agent will almost certainly be entirely original. (Quirk is a producer on the show, so he could use ideas he had for a second book, if he had any.)
"[Matthew Quirk has] written plenty of books, but nothing with these characters in this world," Ryan told TV Linein April 2023. "So it's something that with the pickup we're now working on."
"I would say that [Sutherland's first mission as a Night Agent] will be the starting-off point, to sort of see what he was being sent off to do," Ryan said, referring to where we last saw Sutherland in the Season 1 finale. "But we have some surprises. I don't want to say too much, because until you're actually filming it, the stories can always change."
Ryan also spoke to Comicbook.com in April 2023 about Season 2, revealing that it won't be set in Washington, D.C., where Season 1 was set, and that Sutherland will be on a new adventure with mostly new characters.
"[Season 2] does not take place in the D.C. area, which is where Season 1 took place," Ryan said. "So we'll be in a different part of the world exploring different characters than we had in Season 1. And we're determining who from Season 1 might appear in Season 2. But essentially we're going to be telling a whole brand new story, which is exciting and scary. And with the high bar that Season 1 set for audience expectations, we feel that pressure too. And so we're just going to do our best to tell a story that feels within The Night Agent universe, but that feels new, fresh, and exciting."
